For this reflection I decided to use the article How can I learn to draw from my imagination?. I really enjoyed reading this and I learned a lot from it. One of my favorite points that the article made was, “Drawing from life is wonderful because you get to fully experience your subject. Compare the difference between drawing from a photograph of a person and drawing that person in real life. If you draw from direct observation, you would get to talk to the person, hear their voice, and learn about their personality. All of these aspects of the person that you experience will vastly influence your drawing process.” I found this really relatable for me because for my latest piece I used Gianna as my muse. I found this fun because her and I talked and laughed throughout the entire time I was drawing her. It made me realize and learn different skills that I had never used before.
This is my Boundaries project and I chose to represent the difference between the sky and the water while the moon is rising. I got the inspiration for this from over this past summer while I was in Maine on a lake. There was a gorgeous night with no clouds in the sky and the moon hung over the lake, casting a reflection in the rippling water. As I looked through my pictures for inspiration I thought of doing something like this. I experimented a lot in this. I used salt to create a star texture in the sky, rubbing alcohol to separate and create the lines in the water, and I used rubber cement to keep the reflection a lighter shade. I also created original artwork by using something that I had thought of on my own. I am very proud of the results of this project, and I am excited to share it with others.
For this assignment I chose to take it more literally, and it was honestly because I was so crammed for time. My plan is that when I have more time to work on this project I plan to go back to it and make something more creative. But anyways, this is my piece for "Bloom Where you are Planted." For this project I used water colors and the fountain pen and ink. Here I took a risk by trying to write in cursive using watercolors which was something that I had never tried before. I also collaborated with others. Because I was not feeling this project due to my lack of creativity, some members at my group helped to motivate me to continue to stick with it and finally finish it in the end.
ValueFor my value piece I decided to keep going with the original value piece that I created. For this I started with a square piece of paper and drew lines going across the page at all different angles so that it would make irregular shapes. Then I picked something to draw in the middle. For me, I chose to do a pineapple. So I started by drawing the rough outline of the pineapple, then went back to make it more definitive. Then I picked my colors and began to shade and color everything in. This project took me way longer than I had expected, but I took a risk by sticking with it and finishing it. As I was doing the project I was not liking how it turned out but in the end I am happy with it. I also collaborated with others in my group. They encouraged me to finish this piece, and now that it is done I am thankful for the motivation that they provided for me.
Dear Ms. Haggerty May, 2016
I earned an A in AP Art/Studio Art II because I worked hard day in a and day out. I came to class each day looking to broaden and develop my art making skills. As an artist I have grown tremendously. From the beginning of this year I am able to see just how much I have changed and truly blossomed, not only as an artist but as a person as well. I was the co-president of National Art Honor Society this past year and I was a part of Art Club. Throughout this year I have developed my artmaking skills more than ever. I have proven to myself that if I set my mind to becoming a better artist that I was able to do it.For example all of last year I have loved to do watercolor, I was okay at it. I told myself that that was my goal. My goal was to become very familiar with watercolors and to use them a lot more. Another thing that at the beginning of the year I told myself I wanted to get better at was learning how to draw realistically, whether it be with colored pencil, charcoal or maybe even graphite. I wanted to become more creative and more original with my artwork as well. My goal was to think of things on my own, or to see things put in front of me and draw them just as they were seen. My watercolor skills have improved immensely. I am able to feel happy and satisfied with my work once I have finished with it. This does not mean that everything that I have created in the past year I was in love with, but it does mean that I was a lot easier on myself when I would reflect on how I did. As for my drawings using colored pencil, charcoal or graphite, I can see a large amount of improvement with that as well. Now after a year's practice I am able to show the value of different aspects of the drawing, as well as make the drawings life like. Another thing that I was involved in was National Art Honor Society. I worked to bring other people to the meetings and to help represent art around the school. I gave constructive criticism to people who asked for it. As the co-president, we worked hard to get people involved in Art Club as well. In Art Club we worked on different projects around the school, for example the core values and beliefs painting which was put up back in the fall. Looking back on this past year I am proud of the art student that I have become. I am able to say that I have sharpened my skills as an artist and as a student in general. I worked hard each day to show art throughout the school as well as becoming involved with other classmates to work on different projects around the school together. I love the artist that I have become. Summer ArtworkOver the summer I have created original artwork. My still life that I worked on was not easy for me. I chose to use some freshly picked tomatoes from a local garden on Cape Cod. I did I rough outline then I went back in with colored pencils to work and try and make it as lifelike as possible. It took a lot of layering of the colored pencils in order to get it right but I am pretty happy with my work. I also developed my artmaking skills, before doing the still life I wasn't very comfortable using colored pencils to make things look life like. But now that I have finished I feel better and a lot more confident about it. With this, I certainly took a risk, going into this, I knew I wasn't very good at using the colored pencils the way that I hoped, but in the end, I am pretty happy with my results.
